Not all kitty litter is created equal and here is a short guide to the three major types.
1. Clay Based Litter
Pros: Can come in clumping and dust-free formulas, just check the packaging to be sure. Offers good odor control, easy clean-up and is typically inexpensive.
Cons: Not flushable or biodegradable. Toxic.
2. Crystal Litter
Pros: Very absorbent and dust-free with moderate odor control. Non-toxic.
Cons: It does not clump so clean-up is more difficult. It is also not biodegradable or flushable.
3. Natural Litter (Pine, Paper, Wheat or Corn)
Pros: Moderate and maximum odor control varieties. It is flushable, biodegradable and non-toxic. It is available in clumping and non-clumping varieties for easy clean-up. It is a great choice for cats after surgery or declawing to prevent infection.
Cons: Natural litter options vary greatly between brands so be sure to check the packaging closely to find out how well it controls odors, if it is a clumping formula and if it is flushable.
