Atlas has NO weight on his shoulders

Meet Atlas with his huge paws and sweet demeanor. You can’t help but love this guy.

Atlas comes to us from Riverside Drive where his previous owners could no longer afford to care for him.  He also comes with some pretty serious issues. He is an old fella … 10-12 years old. We believe he is part Maine Coon and at one time must have been about a 20 pound cat. You can see from his back this is no longer true.  He is a sweetheart and mostly all he wants to do is use those big feet of his to make biscuits wherever he finds a place to make them.

Atlas is FIV positive and has other issues as well. The vets aren’t sure yet all that is wrong with him. Whatever his ailments, they are making him not eat. One of our volunteers is trying to force feed him to see if we can get him up to par just enough to hang on for future treatments for his other issues.  He has a long way to go to make it.

Poor fella needs some serious love and care.

Atlas may have held the world on his shoulders in Greek mythology but our boy, Atlas, has a long healing process in front of him and is going to take many trips to the vet and lots of money. If you can find it in your heart to help him by donating for his vet care, he will greatly appreciate it and so will we at Cats Are Us.

A CHRISTMAS CARPENTER

Once long ago there lived a young man named Joseph who worked as a carpenter.  He was an honorable man, loyal and obedient to God.   He loved his family and went to lands far away to protect them from harm.  He was no more special than you or I would have been at the time.  But he was chosen to be special and do something that would change the whole world.  He was just a lowly carpenter.

Aaron Voris was a soldier fighting in a far off land.  His wife, Stephanie, stuck by his side as he fought to protect us all from harm.  Aaron was special in that he chose to fight for his country.  He came home with injuries to his body and his mind.  He may not change to whole entire world but he is changing the lives of many lonely, unloved and lost cats and the people at Cats Are Us.  He, too, is a carpenter.

Aaron is a true blessing to Cats Are Us and we are so happy to have him helping at the shelter.

Aaron is a true blessing to Cats Are Us and we are so happy to have him helping at the shelter.

Aaron comes every day and sits with the cats at the shelter.  He helps out with the care of the shelter and since being there has been able to repair many of the cages that were in need of some carpentry work.  He is our Christmas carpenter … our miracle.  He devotes much of his time to the cats at Cats Are Us and we are proud to call him our friend.

Aaron's love of the cats at the shelter is heartwarming and, as you can tell, the love is mutual.

Aaron’s love of the cats at the shelter is heartwarming and, as you can tell, the love is mutual.

The King James Bible in Hebrews chapter 13 verse 2 states “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”  At Cats Are Us Aaron is our angel and we want everyone to know how much we appreciate him for what he did for his country and for how much he does for Cats Are Us

GO ROSSVIEW SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY

A great group of young adults doing wonderful things!

We don’t always hear about the good things teenagers do today.  So it is our pleasure to honor the Rossview Spanish Honor Society, a group of about 30 young adults, who donated a ton of cat food and cat liter and a ton of time at Pet Smart this last weekend. Deryn Toothman delivered the donations to Cats Are Us and Harley greeted her to say thank you.  (Of course, Harley was NOT supposed to be outside at the time.)

Deryn Toothman and her family adopted Sophie from Cats Are Us and now Sophie, along with Deryn, have grown considerably. Sophie is now 10 and Deryn is now a lovely young woman. Thanks to all their kindness who helped in making the ornaments going on the Kitty Christmas trees and for helping feed our guys and gals. You all will hold a special place in our hearts and Harley and all the others furbabies will never forget you. Cats Are Us salutes Rossview and the Spanish Honor Society! It is our honor to know such fine young people.

YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!

DON’T LET COCOA GIVE UP

DON’T LET US GIVE UP ON COCOA

Cocoa is a sweet little girl cat who came back to us needing some big help. She had a bad abscess on her side that had to be drained and a tube is still in her side to aid in the drainage. To make matters worse she had to have more than half of her teeth pulled. Everyone thought she was not going to make it but a few of us still held out hope for Cocoa and, thanks to a kind and wonderful foster Mom (thanks Ms. Kitty), she may have a chance to improve slowly. She is eating and trying to clean herself and walking a little.  It is still a long road for her and she may yet not make it but it will not be for lack of trying on her part and ours.

Cocoa’s vet bills are going to be very high however even if she doesn’t make it and much higher if she does. Let’s not give up on her like others have.  If you can help Cocoa with her bills, please donate to:

BABY FACE NELSON AND SWEETY NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE!

BABY FACE NELSON’S STORY

Baby Face Nelson was dropped off with another furbaby at Cats Are Us last week. They were tied inside a pillowcase together. Baby Face Nelson had wounds on either side. They appeared to be where a dog had grabbed him in his mouth. Off the vet he went and is getting better but it is slow go as you can see from the photos. Baby Face is a sweet guy and has a great disposition.

SWEETY’S STORY

Our little girl, Sweety has Stomatitis. Stoma is Latin for ‘mouth,’ and itis means ‘inflammation.’ Feline stomatitis is also called by other tongue-twisting medical terms including lymphocytic-plasmacytic stomatitis, feline chronic gingivostomatitis, immune-mediated feline refractory stomatitis, and feline generalized oral inflammatory disease. All of those names describe exactly the same disease.

To cats, however, the condition, no matter what it’s called, means a very painful, serious and chronic oral disease. Feline stomatitis is thought to be autoimmune in nature. The feline immune system seems to overreact to dental plaque around a cat’s teeth, triggering inflammation in the tissues of the mouth. The problem also occurs on the back of the throat at the oral pharynx, and even underlying bone in the mouth can become inflamed or infected. Stomatitis inflammation appears externally in the mouth as angry, red, swollen tissue.

In order for Sweety to feel better and to be able to eat; most of her teeth will have to be pulled. Her vet bill will be around $350.00

You can make a donation online securely through Paypal on the website: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/TN285.html or donate in person at 119 Providence Boulevard Clarksville, TN 37042 during adoption hours (Monday – Saturday 8 am to 11:30 am) or drop a check in the mail to the above address. You may also call the vet’s office at (931) 645-9890 and tell them you want to pay on Cats Are Us’ account specifying it is for Sweety.  I will add Baby FaceNelson’s vet’s number tomorrow.  Unfortunately I do not know for sure which vet we are using for him.  I just know he is one sore little guy.

JOSTENS SPONSORS CATS ARE US SUPPLY DRIVE

Jostens organized a benefit drive for Cats Are Us starting October 23, 2013 through November 1, 2013. Today wasn’t the first day of the drive but the bins were already bursting over with goodies galore. We at Cats Are Us wish to thank everyone there for allowing this to happen and for all the wonderful cat food, cat liter and cat supplies they are providing. While there everyone was so helpful and all I heard was how many cat people there were working there. It was great! The first load was in my car today and the drive hadn’t even started.

Jostens' Cats Are Us Supply Drive going on starting tomorrow and running through the end of this month.
